Nestled in the heart of old Macau is a perfect example of how it is possible to give a new lease on life to a worn, tired home.
Looking out over gardens and the beautiful São Lourenço church, these two 500-square-foot apartments each began life as cramped two-bedroom, one-bathroom dwellings with bars on the windows, creating a strong sense of confinement. In a drastic floor-to-ceiling renovation process, everything was removed – electrical wiring, plumbing, floors and walls – that created two beautiful, bright and open studio apartments.
Suzanne Watkinson of Ambiente Macau designed and managed the projects. Beginning with a clear canvas, she set about producing a modern open-plan look. Attention is focused on the apartments’ sensational views, with oversized sliding windows allowing natural light to flood in over window seats.
Natural teakwood flooring was laid and all cabinetry in the kitchenettes was kept white to make the space feel bigger. The living space was optimized by putting in a walk-in closet behind a hidden door to store clothes, linen, suitcases, and other bulky items.
The bathrooms also follow the open-plan theme: Italian tiles look like natural stone, and the rain-shower area is separated from the rest of the bathroom by a single panel of glass.
The yellow-and-white color scheme of the adjacent church was carried into one of the apartments to make the home at one with its surroundings. Both apartments feature original Brian Tilbrook artwork on the walls. Furnished with a mix of designer and antique pieces, these renovated delights exemplify a style that is simple, elegant and timeless.
